About

Miyajidake Shrine in Fukutsu holds its biggest festival of the year from September 21 to 23. Also called Hojoe, it thanks the gods for the harvest. The scene to see is the procession on the 23rd: spear bearers in yakko costume lead the mikoshi, ministers of the left and right, a festival queen in a twelve-layered kimono riding an ox-drawn carriage and priests in court dress along the roughly 2 km approach between Miyajihama Beach and the shrine, like a Heian picture scroll come to life. A female entertainer is picked as queen each year. On the 22nd there are festive performances at a special venue and the Negai Kanae fireworks, where wishes submitted in advance are stuck onto shells and fired skyward. Take a Nishitetsu bus from JR Fukuma Station to Miyajidake Jinja-mae and walk about 3 minutes.
