About

Kasumigajo Park, a prefectural park built on the ruins of Nihonmatsu Castle and one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, holds its festival while the trees are at their best. Roughly 2,500 trees, mostly Somei-yoshino, flower from early April into early May. After sunset, about 500 lanterns and 9 large paper lamps glow around Sannomaru Plaza, transforming the scene into something quite different from the daytime view. The lights are on from 18:00 to 22:00. In 2026 the festival ran April 3 to May 6. Sannomaru Plaza and the Japanese garden, around the Kasumi and Ruri ponds and the umbrella pine, are about 20 minutes on foot from JR Nihonmatsu Station or about 5 minutes by car from the Nihonmatsu exit of the Tohoku Expressway. Contact the Nihonmatsu Tourism Association with questions.
