About

Gifu City's summer fireworks festival lights up the sky over the Nagara River with work from pyrotechnicians across Japan. The shells go up from a sandbar on the south side of the river, between Nagara Bridge and Kinka Bridge, and the place to watch is the north bank. Paid supporter seats are available but must be bought ahead of time. The festival is run by an executive committee with backing from Gifu Prefecture and others. It goes ahead in light rain; storms or high water push it to a backup date, and if that date also falls through there is no further attempt. Often counted among Gifu's summer traditions, it brings traffic restrictions to nearby roads on the night.
