About

On a summer night, as part of the Mizunami Mino Genji Tanabata Festival, fireworks go up from the banks of the Toki River in Mizunami. What makes this display unusual is that it is a "prayer fireworks" show funded by contributions from individual residents, so each burst carries someone's wish, perhaps for a family's happiness or for a better town. Shows like this are rare in Japan, and while many places have lost their fireworks, Mizunami has kept this one going for many years. It is a down-to-earth summer night spent looking up with locals at fireworks over their own streets.
