About
Gujo Hachiman Castle hosts this festival when the maples around it are at their best. Usually wrapped in green hills, which earned it the name Sekisui-jo, the hilltop castle turns so red in autumn that people describe the keep as "ablaze." Color usually peaks in early to mid November. On weekends and holidays during the festival there are taiko performances and matchlock gun demonstrations at the castle, along with goods sold only at this time. After dark the castle and the Tenku no Momiji Teien maple garden are illuminated, and the keep, framed by red leaves, appears to hang in the night sky. The light-up dates can shift with the foliage, so check before you go.
