About
On a winter night at Nakazato Hiroba in the Koshimoto district of Katashina, this festival honors fire, long a mainstay of daily life, as a sacred flame. Two huge bonfires stand for the fires of the gods, and young men in white garments carry a mikoshi in circles around them, a striking sight on snow-covered ground. The local Oze Daiko drummers perform, beans are thrown with wishes for good health, and food trucks set up on site. Anyone, from the village or not, is welcome to join in. To mark the thirtieth festival in 2026, fireworks went up into the winter sky. The organizers are Katashina's Fifth District and the Koshimoto Mikoshi Preservation Society.
