About

Timed to the azalea bloom, Tatebayashi, the self-styled town of flowers, holds its biggest event at Tsutsujigaoka Park from early April to early May each year. The park, a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, has groves of ancient azaleas, including one estimated at 800 years old and associated with the court lady Koto no Naishi, and "space azaleas" grown from seeds that Tatebayashi-born astronaut Chiaki Mukai took into space. Several hundred thousand people come every year. During the festival, azalea guides offer free tours of about 40 minutes, and sign-language tours can be requested. The big lawn hosts the opening ceremony, a Yagibushi contest and a produce fair. The entry fee changes with the state of the bloom, and junior high students and younger get in free.
