About
Usually in mid-July, the Gion Festival at Susanoo Shrine in Shinichi-cho Tode, Fukuyama, ends with its fighting portable shrines. The festival is said to go back more than a thousand years, and its big moment comes when shrines are driven into each other, each impact ringing out across the grounds with a deep boom. Drums and flutes keep up a steady roar, and bearers in brightly colored happi coats add to the heat of it all. Crowds turn out every year to pray for good health. The shrine has room for only five cars, so take the train: from Fukuyama Station, ride the JR Fukuen Line bound for Fuchu to Kami-Tode Station, then walk about three minutes.
