About
Kinoe Itsukushima Shrine in the Kinoe district of Osakikamijima holds its festival from morning to night across this island port town. The daytime highlight is the kaidenma rowing race: each district sends out one of four boats, and young crews pull hard against each other around Kinoe Port. There's also a procession from the shrine, a sea crossing on a ceremonial boat, a portable shrine carried through the streets, and a rice-cake scramble. In the evening, after a stage show, around 3,500 fireworks burst over the sea. Getting there means taking a ferry, and since no extra sailings are added and some cars get left behind every year, visitors driving over are advised to stay the night on the island.
