About
Held on a Saturday close to June 27 of the old lunar calendar as the annual festival of Sumiyoshi Shrine in Onomichi, this is a fireworks show over the Onomichi Channel. About 13,000 shells go up, finishing with a display synchronized to music. Three lantern boats, decorated as a mountain, a torii gate and a gohei wand, cross the water with a portable shrine, a sign that the fireworks are an offering to the gods. The festival goes back to the mid-Edo period. In 1741 the town magistrate Hirayama Kakuzaemon Naozumi built the Sumiyoshi shore and relocated Sumiyoshi Shrine there from the grounds of Jodoji Temple to watch over the port. Wholesale seafood merchants are said to have started the festival in his honor, praying for business and safe passage at sea. From JR Onomichi Station, it's about a 15-minute walk along Kaigan-dori by the water.
