About
In early summer, Tomonoura stages its traditional sea bream netting for spectators, letting you watch the tai-shibari-ami method, an intangible folk cultural asset of Fukuyama City, from a boat. With Sensuijima Island as the backdrop, the fishermen draw the net tight right in front of you. There is a single show daily at 11:00, lasting about 75 minutes. Catch the ferry from Tomo's municipal pier to Sensuijima, then switch to a viewing boat there. Your ticket also gets you a draw for sea bream or Homeishu liqueur, the chance to buy the morning's sea bream and small fish at a discount, and a free guided walk of Tomonoura's historic sites afterward. Tickets are sold in advance and on the day. The technique was refined in the Edo period by Murakami Tarobei, who had been granted Hashirijima Island, and the idea of showing it to visitors came from Tomo's Taisho-era mayor, Yokoyama Unji.
