About
For three days from the first Friday of June, Enryuji Temple in Naka Ward, Hiroshima, holds its early-summer festival, popularly known as the day to put on your first yukata of the year. It honors Toka Daimyojin, the temple's guardian deity, also called Inari Daimyojin; read another way, the characters for Inari become toka, hence the name. The deity is said to have been brought here when the temple was founded in 1619, with the festival following from 1620. The sacred image, normally hidden, is shown only during these three days. Ranked with Ebisu-ko and the Sumiyoshi Shrine festival as one of Hiroshima's three great festivals, it fills the area from the temple to Chuo-dori with people in yukata. The current schedule has been used since 1998.
