About

On the first Sunday of June, the town of Mibu in Kitahiroshima welcomes Sanbai, the god of the rice paddies, and prays for a good harvest with a ceremonial planting. Recognized as a vivid expression of Japan's rice culture, it was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2011. Oxen dressed in finery work the flooded field first; then rows of saotome, young women planters, set out the seedlings while rice-planting songs are sung, a scene often likened to a picture scroll. The whole town is in festival mode that day. Before the main planting, performers parade through the streets in the michiyuki, and the Hanagasa dance of Honji is also performed. Stalls sell local food and products, so families can easily make a day of it.
