About
On summer nights in Miyoshi, lantern-lit boats take to the river for cormorant fishing, a method handed down for around 450 years and listed as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Hiroshima Prefecture. Visitors board sightseeing boats at the cormorant fishing pier and ride right alongside the fishing master's boat as it makes its way along the river. Traveling together like this is a style unique to Miyoshi, and it lets you see the master's handiwork and the birds diving in the dark up close. The master, in a tall black cap and straw waist skirt, works leashes about seven meters long, reputedly the longest in Japan. Don't miss the moment a bird swallows a sweetfish and he reels it in to make it give up the catch. Boats run on summer evenings; adults pay 4,000 yen, and you can also charter a whole boat.
