About

Kameyama Shrine, guardian shrine of old Kure, holds its autumn festival over the Saturday and Sunday that include the second Sunday of October, giving thanks for the harvest. Saturday is the eve festival and Sunday the main rites. Watch for the yabu, demon figures with a name found only in Kure, whose job is to protect the deity and clear the way. On Sunday afternoon the tombo, a portable shrine made of straw bales filled with new rice, heads to the shrine with yabu and musicians, and there's a fierce shoving match with the yabu on the stone steps before it is offered. After that the large portable shrine sets out into town under yabu escort. Throughout both days the road up to the shrine is closed to traffic and packed with stalls.
