About

On the evening of April 15 each year, Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima holds a ceremony followed by bugaku, court dance set to gagaku music. Bugaku is said to have been brought from Kyoto by Taira no Kiyomori, and the shrine has kept more than twenty pieces since the late 12th century, among them Ryo-o, Nasori, Manzairaku and Engiraku. The Tokasai program opens with a piece offering peach blossoms to the deities, moves through dances such as Enbu, Manzairaku, Engiraku, Sanju, Kitoku, Ryo-o and Nasori, and ends with Choge-shi. Noh is performed for the festival from April 16 to 18, and on October 15 the autumn Kikkasai offers chrysanthemums. If you go, don't set up a tripod inside the shrine buildings or use flash in front of the raised stage.
