About

Mito's biggest summer festival takes over National Route 50, from the north exit of Mito Station to the Daikumachi intersection, for two days in early August. Its two mainstays are the float parade and the Mito Komon Carnival, when dance troupes fill the road. You can also see a lantern procession carrying Suifu lanterns, a traditional Mito craft, and the Mito Furusato Mikoshi, one of the biggest portable shrines in Japan. In 2026, its 66th edition, the festival drew more than 340,000 people over three days. As a related event, the Mito Kairakuen Fireworks are held over Lake Senba in late July. The festival is organised by the Mito Komon Matsuri executive committee.
