About
Each spring, Hie Shrine in the Ono district of Tsuchiura holds a mounted archery rite tied to a legend about the killing of a huge monkey. It is counted among Japan's three great Sanno yabusame and is designated an intangible folk cultural property of Ibaraki Prefecture. Three targets stand along a 150-metre track, and archers in samurai armour loose whistling arrows at them from galloping horses. It is a bold, spirited rite carried out according to old custom. For details before you go, contact the Tsuchiura Tourism Association's Niihari information office (Komachi no Yakata).
