About
Amami Matsuri fills the town of Naze on Amami Oshima for several days each summer and is one of the largest festivals in the Amami Islands; in 2026 it ran from July 30 to August 2. Boat crews race each other across the harbor, and on the night of July 31 fireworks burst over Naze Port. You can catch hachigatsu odori dancing on streets such as Shicho-dori and Honmachi-dori, as well as a sumo tournament. Things kick off with an enka and dance show on stage, and the last day closes with a parade of bands, mikoshi shrines and dance groups through town. The fireworks wait for the ferry to arrive, so the start time can slip. Each event has its own venue and schedule.
