About
Every July 23, Takeda Shrine in Kaseda, Minamisatsuma, holds a summer festival counted among the three great summer festivals of Kagoshima Prefecture. People come for the samurai odori, a warrior dance kept alive for more than 400 years and listed as a prefectural Intangible Folk Cultural Property; its nise odori and chigo odori are offered before the shrine in their old form. Water-wheel automata and local performing arts round out the day. This part of town is rich in sites tied to Shimazu Jishinsai (Tadayoshi), honored as the restorer of the Shimazu clan. On festival day, lanterns large and small glow in the old samurai residence district and along Inishie-no-Michi, a path lined with 47 stone tablets bearing the Iroha poems, so it is worth a walk between dances.
