About
Every May 5, the six leading shrines of old Sagami Province meet in Kozu-Hongo, Oiso, to pray for peace and good harvests. Rokusho Shrine, the provincial head shrine, is joined by Samukawa, Kawawa, Hibita and Sakitori shrines, ranked first to fourth, and by Hiratsuka Hachimangu. On Kamisoroiyama hill an old-style ritual debate plays out: the first and second shrines take turns spreading tiger skins toward the altar, and on the third round the priest of the third shrine steps in with "let us leave it until next year." At Oyaba, the Heron Dance greets each shrine's mikoshi, followed by a grand offering of food trays, a ceremony of the deities meeting, and a rite in which the mayor of Oiso presents offerings as the provincial governor. It is an intangible folk cultural property designated by Kanagawa Prefecture.
