About
On the last Sunday of April, the beach at Akaoka in Konan City hosts a bold and quirky festival full of Tosa spirit. Beach-seine nets bring in dorome, the tiny fry of sardines and round herring, which are eaten fresh as a snack with local sake, and there is a fishing-boat parade, brass band music and dorome dancing. Everyone waits for the giant cup drinking contest: competitors drain a huge cup filled to the brim with sake and earn points for both speed and style. From the 2026 fiscal year, men and women alike must down five go, about 0.9 liters.
