About

From mid-April to mid-May, more than 500 carp streamers fly above the Shimanto River at Tokawa in Shimanto Town. This is where the idea of stringing koinobori across a river began. In 1973, young members of the local athletic club heard that some boys, now older, no longer had carp streamers flown for them at home; the next year, 1974, the club hung about 50 streamers on ropes across the river. Streamers soon started arriving from around Japan, and in 1997 200 of them even flew over the Niagara River. Koinobori Park is the place to watch from, and it hosts events during the season.
