About
Sakawa Town throws a birthday party every spring for its native son, the botanist Dr. Makino Tomitaro. For his 164th birthday in 2026, the main days were April 25 and 26, when Makino Park hosted the Ranman Market, with stalls of food, crafts, wild plants and succulents from Sakawa and further afield. There was live music, guided walks of Makino Park and a birthday cake built from flowers and grasses. On the birthday itself, April 24, people visited his grave and joined a walk. During the festival the Meikyokan showed a photo exhibition and the Sakawa Bunko storehouse an exhibition on playing with plants, and on the main days the town's Seizan Bunko and Sakawa Geological Museum were free to enter.
