About

Around 1,000 T-shirts printed with pictures and photos sent in from across Japan flutter over Irino Beach in Kuroshio Town during this exhibition. The organizer, the Sunahama Museum, owns no building; its idea is that the beach itself is the museum, and this show, first held in 1989, is where that idea began. The shirts hang like washing from ropes tied between stakes in the sand, flapping in the wind and mirrored in the wet sand where the waves run up. The best way to enjoy it is to take in the whole beach as a single artwork. Anyone can submit a design. Daily events include a contest to see who can kick a beach sandal the farthest and shows on a beach stage. Visitors of junior-high age and up are asked for a contribution.

On the day, see what locals are murmuring on the murmur map

murmur is an app that shows short, anonymous posts on a map, right where they were written. On festival day, open the map around the venue and see what people nearby are saying.
