About
People dressed as Muromachi-period courtiers walk through central Nakamura in Shimanto City, like a picture scroll come to life. The procession re-enacts the arrival of Lord Ichijo Norifusa, who left Kyoto in 1468 and settled in the Nakamura palace to win back the family's Hata estate. Started in 1992, it takes its model from the court-noble procession of Kyoto's Aoi Matsuri, a festival with close ties to the Ichijo family, and it gives thanks both to the natural world centered on the clear Shimanto River and to the generations of Tosa Ichijo lords who built Nakamura. About 100 participants in all take part, with costume colors that change according to each role, so it is fun to compare them from the roadside.
