About
In the spring of 1598, Toyotomi Hideyoshi held one of the most famous cherry blossom viewings in Japanese history at Daigoji. For the occasion he had 700 cherry trees planted, brought from the surrounding Kinai region, built the Sanboin residence and garden, and hosted a lavish banquet; more than 1,300 people, among them his son Hideyori, his wife Kita-no-Mandokoro, his consort Yodo and the ladies of the household, are said to have taken part. The temple recreates that celebration with a procession on the second Sunday of April. Known as "Daigo of the blossoms" since the Heian period, the World Heritage temple grounds bloom in waves of weeping, Somei-Yoshino, wild and double-flowered cherries, and the whole precinct is lively throughout procession day. Note that the 2026 procession was cancelled.
