About

Every April the geiko and maiko of Gion Kobu take the stage for the Miyako Odori, a spring dance revue first staged in 1872 as a sideshow to an exhibition held to revive the city after the capital moved to Tokyo. After the opening cry of "Yoiyasa!", the curtain stays up for the whole show as the dancers move through the four seasons in kimono of Kyo-yuzen dyeing and Nishijin weaving, ending once more among the cherry blossoms. The music is played live on stage by the geiko and maiko themselves, and each year brings a newly written piece choreographed by the head of the Inoue school of Kyomai dance. The 153rd edition is scheduled for April 1–30, 2027 at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theater, with three shows a day.
