About
Jonangu Shrine recreates a poetry party once held at the imperial court in the Nara and Heian periods, staged beside a gently winding stream in the shrine's Heian Garden. Seven poets in Heian-era court dress take their places along the bank, and after a shirabyoshi dancer performs on the central stage, two page boys float cups of sacred sake downstream on carriers shaped like mandarin ducks. Each poet composes a waka on a set theme, writes it on a strip of paper, then lifts a passing cup and drinks. Finally a priest chants the seven poems aloud as an offering to the gods. It takes place every April 29 from 3 p.m. for about 50 minutes, and viewing requires advance application.
