About

On the evening of August 16, Miyazu holds a lantern-floating ceremony and fireworks display around Shimazaki Park and Miyazu Bay. After Buddhist hymns at dusk, illuminated spirit boats are set adrift from about 7:20 p.m., followed by a stream of red and white lanterns floating out across the bay. Lanterns are sold at the venue too, so visitors can write a posthumous Buddhist name or a wish on one and send it off. From 7:50 p.m., around 2,000 fireworks burst over the water, and a Bon dance carries on after the show. About 70,000 people came in 2026. Smoking, tents, tripods and drones are not allowed at the venue.
