About
On the second Sunday of October, Katte Shrine in the Yamabata district of Iga receives an offering of dance whose highlight is the flowery decorations swaying on the dancers' backs. The 6 dancers wear ochizui, decorated with colorful hanging flowers, and strike small drums on their chests as they move gently to song and drum. In the procession from the temporary shrine, a monkey and red and black horses go first, teasing children and onlookers along the way, which keeps things lively. Among the kanko dances of Mie Prefecture, it is considered the leading example of the rain-prayer type, and it comes from the furyu odori tradition that spread in the mid-Edo period. It is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and is inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
