About
In autumn at the Yunoyama hot spring resort in Komono, men dressed as warrior monks carry a fire-spitting portable shrine through the streets. Billed as Mie Prefecture's largest fire festival, it features a 600 kg shrine crowned with torches that send up fierce flames. It honors the warrior monks of Sangaku-ji Temple, said to have bravely stood up to Oda Nobunaga. There are also warrior-monk taiko, fireworks, stage shows and performances, and with night stalls lining the resort, the town fills with drumbeats and the heat of the flames. It runs from evening into the night, and free shuttle buses operate.
