About
On May 5, seedlings are planted in the sacred rice paddy of Sarutahiko Shrine in Ise to the beat of dengaku music. This rite, called Omita, has long been held to pray for rich harvests and plentiful fish, and is a designated intangible cultural asset. The planters wear costumes modeled on Momoyama-period dress, and the scene of them working the flooded field has a fresh early-summer feel. When the planting is done, a lively harvest dance is offered in hope of a bumper year. From Kintetsu/JR Iseshi Station, the shrine is about 15 minutes by a bus bound for the Inner Shrine; get off at Sarutahiko-jinja-mae.
