About

At the Tado Festival, the annual rite of Tado Taisha, young riders gallop their horses up a slope in the Ageuma ritual. Tado Taisha is sometimes called the Ise Grand Shrine of the North. The riders are young men, one chosen from each of 3 districts, Koyama, Totsu and Tado, and they charge up the slope as an offering to the gods; the district that rides first, a role that rotates each year, is called hana-uma. The festival lasts 2 days, and early on the final morning the riders purify themselves in the Ochiba River before the main rites. It is said to have begun with local samurai families in the 14th century; after Oda Nobunaga's wars destroyed the shrine's records and the rite lapsed, Honda Tadakatsu, newly installed as lord of Kuwana Castle, revived it in 1601. It became an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Mie Prefecture in 1978. The shrine is about 20 minutes on foot from Tado Station on the Yoro Railway, and parking runs short, so come by train.
