About
In the run-up to the Doll Festival, the town of Aya puts about 20 hinayama on show, so you can stroll from one to the next. A hinayama is a celebration custom that has survived in Aya since the Edo period: for an eldest daughter's first Doll Festival, relatives and neighbours bring old wood, moss and flowers collected from the hills and rivers and build a landscape of mountains and streams at the back of the tatami room, wishing that she will grow up healthy and tall like Aya's forest. Every display is different, and comparing them is half the fun. A local hinayama committee runs the festival to hand the custom on to younger generations. A stamp rally, kimono dressing for children and a market are also planned, making it a good excuse for a walk around town.
