About
Every February 10 and 11, Imayama Ebisu Shrine, a subsidiary shrine in the grounds of Imayama Hachimangu in Nobeoka, holds its festival. February 10 is called Hon-Ebisu, the main day, and February 11 Ake-Ebisu, the closing day. Alongside the Ebisu shrines of Hakata and Wakamatsu, it is one of Kyushu's three great Ebisu festivals; it has continued since the Edo period and is said to draw tens of thousands of people in one night. Rites pray for thriving business and safe voyages, kagura is offered, and old charms and lucky bamboo branches are burned in a closing ceremony. The approach to the shrine becomes a pedestrian zone packed with stalls. It is about a 10-minute walk from JR Nobeoka Station, so coming by train is easy.
