About
Takachiho, known for the legend of the heavenly grandson descending to earth, holds this festival on National Foundation Day. The star is the Parade of the Gods: crowds of people in ancient costume, dressed as deities, walk about 1.4 km from Takachiho Shrine to Kushifuru Shrine, as if scenes from the myths had stepped into the streets. There are quirky events such as a god and goddess contest, along with traditional performing arts and displays of portable shrines from shrines around town. With a bazaar and local specialties on sale too, the whole town centre takes on a festive air. Roads are restricted on the day, so plan your movements accordingly.
