About
In the Kuwanouchi district of Gokase, kagura sacred dances go on all night long. The performance opens at Kuwanouchi Shrine in the late afternoon, then moves to the district's community hall, where the dancing continues into the next morning. Kuwanouchi's kagura stands out for using more hannya (demon) masks than other styles and for its brisk pace. It is thought to have begun in the early Meiji era, judging from a surviving dance robe marked Meiji 3 (1870), the same year the shrine was relocated. Yokagura is a sacred rite, not a show, so watch it as a guest before the gods. Nights are cold, so dress warmly and bring food and drinks. Admission is free.
