About

This rare festival, handed down for more than a thousand years, is said to be the yearly reunion of King Teika, of the royal family of the ancient Korean kingdom of Baekje, and his son Prince Fukuchi. A party from Hiki Shrine in Kijo carries the Fukurogami about 90 km along a set route to Mikado Shrine in the Nango area of Misato, and stays there for three days. On the Noborimashi, the journey in, big bonfires are lit near the shrine at dusk to greet the prince's party. On the middle day, kagura is offered. At the Kudarimashi farewell, locals daub their faces with soot and wave bamboo baskets and the like, calling out "Osaraba" as the party leaves. The simple faith of the area survives here much as it always has.
