In winter, Aoshima Shrine in Miyazaki City holds a purification rite in the sea. Around 400 men and women from all over Japan walk into the water in front of the shrine to cleanse themselves, then go up to pray. The custom comes from myth: when the deity Hikohohodemi returned without warning from the palace of the sea god, the villagers rushed out to welcome him without stopping to dress. In the shrine's calendar, this is the winter festival; the others are a spring island-opening rite, a summer festival in which the portable shrine circles the island aboard a fishing boat, and an autumn grand festival.
