About
Every April 29, Hayauma Shrine in Mimata holds a festival with more than 100 years of history. Together with the Mochio grand festival, it is called one of the two great festivals of the Miyakonojo and Kitamorokata area. In the shrine grounds, the Jankan horse dance, a prayer for good harvests, opens a lineup of folk performing arts offered in turn by the town's districts. Afterwards the dancers go back to their own neighbourhoods and perform again, a custom known as niwa-modoshi. On stage there are dances by local groups and a show by the area's hero characters, and archery, kendo, shihanmato (seated archery) and judo tournaments are held as offerings the same day. It is a chance to see, all at once, the performing arts that live on in local life.
