About
For three days every mid-April, Imayama Daishi Temple in Nobeoka holds a festival locals call "Odaissan," counted among Kyushu's three great spring festivals. The grand finale, the city parade, is the main event: after the customary feudal lord's procession, about 1,000 people from in and around the city take to the streets with dance and performances. At the temple there are grand memorial services, special goma fire prayers and a rice-cake scattering, and at hospitality stations in the shopping streets passers-by are treated to food and drink, a custom called osettai. Take time to look at the witty mitate-zaiku figures and other displays, and the local-produce stalls along the temple approach. A 17-meter statue of Kobo Daishi stands at the temple, watching over the town.
