About
Every July the hot spring town of Togura Kamiyamada, on the Chikuma River, throws a two-day summer festival. It traces back to the enshrining of the water deity Suitengu to keep the river in check, and it still carries thanks for the hot springs and a wish to be spared from floods. Day one starts with Shinto rites, then children's portable shrines, drumming and a parade of folk dancers in yukata wind through the streets. Day two belongs to the bold lion dance and the young men's portable shrine, joined by a float on which geisha perform hand dances. After dark the bearers' chants mix with the beat of the Kamuriki drums, and fireworks wrap things up. Food stalls are out on both days, so it is a fine time to stroll the spa town in a yukata.
