About
Ueda's summer festival has been going since 1972 under the slogan of dancing, carrying and drumming. Neighborhood associations, schools, companies and clubs form teams called ren and dance through the city center shouting "Wasshoi!" Teams may perform the standard dance or one they choreographed themselves, and others take part by shouldering portable shrines or beating taiko. Shrine teams go out in the late afternoon, and dancers and drummers fill the streets after dark. Even if you have not signed up, you can join the drop-in team on the day without registering, jumping in and leaving wherever you like (dancing only). A contest hands out prizes for both the standard and original dances. Streets in the center are closed to traffic, so arriving by train or bus is encouraged. The festival is run by the Ueda Wasshoi executive committee.

On the day, see what locals are murmuring on the murmur map
