About

The annual festival of Nyakuichi Oji Shrine in Omachi fills the town for two days. Its yabusame, or horseback archery, is counted among Japan's three great yabusame events, and unusually for Japan the archers are children. On day one, the Otenno-sama procession praying for the health of residents and a parade of costumed children wind through the streets, and at night the stage floats of each district gather in one place while festival music plays. On day two the young archers ride through town and shoot at spots such as the station rotary. The floats and banners of each district also visit the shrine to perform their main music, and the night ends with a contest of farewell music between the districts.
