About
On April 15 each year, the Maemiya shrine of Suwa Taisha's Upper Shrine in Chino holds Ontosai, counted as the Upper Shrine's most important rite. It is also called the Tori no Matsuri, because it was once held on a Day of the Rooster in the third month. What draws attention are the offerings set before the deity: deer heads, together with birds, game and fish. Legend says 75 deer heads were once laid out, and one of them always had a split ear, a story now listed among the shrine's Seven Wonders.
