About
Kaikoen, built on the ruins of Komoro Castle, celebrates spring with a cherry blossom festival. It is one of Japan's top 100 cherry blossom spots, and the trees were planted in the Taisho era to a plan by the renowned landscape designer Seiroku Honda. The pairing of mossy old castle walls with soft pink flowers is the scene that makes this park special. Climb onto the walls around the site of the main keep and the blossoms filling the old riding ground below look like a sea of clouds. Because Somei-yoshino, weeping cherries, higan cherries and the deep pink, double-flowered Komoro Yae Beni Shidare, said to have originated in Komoro, bloom one after another, the season lasts a long time. Somei-yoshino usually peaks from mid-April, and Komoro Yae Beni Shidare from late April.
