About
From the first blossoms until the last petals fall, Takato Castle Ruins Park in Ina holds its cherry blossom festival. The park has been praised as having the finest cherry blossoms under heaven and is listed among Japan's top 100 cherry blossom spots. Most of its roughly 1,500 trees are Takato Kohigan-zakura, a variety found only here, with small, rosy-pink flowers; the grove is a prefectural natural monument. Some of the trees are around 150 years old or more, moved by former samurai of the Takato domain from the old riding grounds when the castle site became a park in the Meiji era. Admission is charged during the festival, and at peak bloom the trees and the Ounkyo bridge are lit up for night viewing.
