About

On an autumn night at Nanakuri Shrine in the Yamamoto district of Iida, sparks fly in a fierce, spirited festival. Tradition holds that it began in the Nanboku-cho period as a way to comfort Prince Muneyoshi of the Southern Court. When the traditional sangoku fireworks start showering sparks over the grounds, bare young men rush underneath and dance, swinging huge wooden tubs above their heads. Watching them brandish the tubs while embers rain down on their skin is truly gripping, and the darkness makes every spark stand out. The shrine is about 3 minutes by car from the Iida-Yamamoto interchange of the Chuo Expressway, and the Yamamoto community center is suggested for parking.
