About
Kaikoen, the park on the ruins of Komoro Castle, holds a festival while its trees are at their most colorful. The park sits on a plateau at 659 m, and its zelkova and maples turn red and gold, usually looking best from late October to mid-November. A "three-color maple," with single leaves showing red, green and yellow together, once caused a stir here. Komoro Castle is one of Japan's 100 Fine Castles, and its stone walls, some 400 years old, make a handsome backdrop for the foliage. From the Ninomaru site you can see Mount Asama, from the Mizunote gate site you look down on the Chikuma River, and from the observation deck Mount Fuji appears in the distance. Parking at Kaikoen fills up during the festival, so visitors are pointed to other lots nearby.
